Flat LCD sets outsold the old tube sets worldwide for the first time at the end of 2007. The thinner the set, the less room for speakers, and the ones that fit often ended up on the back, which is the side nobody sits on. In one 2023 survey, 51% of Americans under 30 said they keep the subtitles on most of the time or always. Half a generation reads its television now.
For now: look in the sound settings for night mode; it quiets explosions more than voices.
